As we approach Samhain and the Day of the Dead, we're given a glimpse into the realm beyond the physical world, a place where it is said that the spirits dwell.
Remember, in the circle of life, transitioning to the spirit world is a natural and inevitable path we all must tread.
We often shy away from this subject by squashing it down into the unconscious parts of ourselves.
Yet, in truth, it's just a part of our shared experience as a species.
Two traditions, miles apart, echo this truth in their own unique ways.
Enter Samhain, a Celtic ritual marking the thinning boundary between our world and the spirit realm.
Taking place between October 31st and November 1st, it's a day to remember the departed and embrace the supernatural aspects of this world.
Then, there's the Day of the Dead, a South American tradition, particularly celebrated in Mexico from October 31 to November 2.
This celebration is more than just remembering. It's a joyful reunion with loved ones that have passed beyond the veil.
They offer marigolds, food, and the iconic sugar skulls to give thanks to their dead ancestors.
The air is filled not with mourning, but joyous remembrance, keeping the spiritual bond with the departed alive and well.
Although originating from different cultures, both Samhain and the Day of the Dead celebrate the cyclical nature of life, reminding us to honour the dead and view death as a natural part of life’s journey.
What thoughts arise for you when you contemplate these festivals connected to death?
Perhaps it feels too uncomfortable or painful to even contemplate, leading you to avoid the topic altogether.
Or perhaps you believe that nothing exists beyond this current earthly plane of existence and this is all there is.
Alternatively, maybe you hold the belief that death is merely a transition from one realm to another and believe that we are eternal beings where there is no death.
If it resonates with you, that death is but a return to our eternal home, then perhaps it's time to express a heartfelt thank you for the shared journey and the unique touch each departed soul has left on your life.
Could you be grateful for the love and connection that you've experienced with each other?
Could you be grateful, even if that love has left your heart broken because you miss them so much?
Could you be even grateful for any soul contracts which may have brought you pain within your relationship, even if the effects remain with you to this very day?
Could you honour them right now?
If you are still struggling with grief and loss due to the severed physical bond between you, then consider this: grief only arises from having experienced profound love for another.
This is one of the many reasons for our incarnation on this earth, that we learn to embody love, even in the face of potential loss.
In essence, our true nature is love, which remains consistent, even during the most challenging and painful moments of our lives.
In fact, the bonds of love remain intact, transcending both worlds and your paths will inevitably reunite again within the spiritual realms.
So whatever feelings emerge within you as you think of death during this time, treat yourself with kindness and compassion today.
Allow your heart to be exactly as it is, knowing life follows death and vice versa and that death is not the end.
It is just a transitional process of the eternal soul and we will meet our loved ones again.
